Autumn is approaching, a very intense period for the large mammals of the Tatra Mountains. Bears are „bulking up” and deer have only romance on their minds… This is also the time when these animals can be dangerous.
Here are a few simple tips on how to avoid unpleasant situations and unnecessary conflicts with our forest friends:
👉 Do not confuse wild animals with farm or domesticated ones. Our Lubo comes from a breeding farm and is used to human presence. Feeding and petting him is not only safe but enjoyable for both sides. It is completely different with wild animals, especially during the rutting season.
👉 Do not panic if you meet an animal on a hike. An animal will only attack when frightened, surprised or defending itself or its offspring.
👉 Do not squeal or shout at the sight of a bear. The animal may get scared or treat you as prey.
👉 Do not run away in such situations. Move away calmly. Then the animal will have no reason to chase you.
👉 Keep your distance, no selfie is worth it.
👉 Do not try to pet or touch. Wild animals are not, and should not be, used to our touch.
👉 Do not move around the national park area after dark. At night, bears and other animals come out onto the trails, not expecting people there.
👉 Do not feed wild animals. Bears and deer fed by humans will learn to treat us as a source of food. This situation is dangerous for everyone. Imagine a bear learning that in places where families rest during mountain hikes, food can be found. Remember also not to leave any trash behind in their home, even something as innocuous as apple cores. Equally attractive to bears are fruits currently falling from trees, even those near human dwellings!
Deer also approach human settlements. We are currently in rutting season, the mating period during which these animals are very agitated and can therefore be dangerous. Let us be careful and reasonable in our behavior…
